Local Conservatives team celebrate after winning three seats

The Conservatives have won three out of four seats in town council by-elections.

Conservative candidate Elaine Hatton won in Carterton's Rock Farm ward, Liberal Democrat Carrie Ann Lincoln and Local Conservative Steve Vaughan won the two seats in Shillbrook ward and Local Conservative candidate Simon Watson was elected in the Upavon ward on Thursday (January 16).

The elections were triggered after four councillors stepped down from the town council in December with three being Liberal Democrats who left the council after a falling out with Lib Dem colleagues.

The elections to find their replacements took place on Thursday 16th January.

The town council had been under Conservative control since it was first formed in 1985 but they lost control to the Lib Dems in 2023.

They regained it when councillors Kathy Godwin and Liz Wood left the Lib Dem group and Robin Brooks quit to sit as independent in a dispute over the Lib Dems’ choice of deputy mayor.

Liam Walker, Deputy Conservative group leader on West Oxfordshire District Council, said: "I’m pleased to confirm we won three out of four seats, taking two seats from the Lib Dems and holding one. This is a great result and shows people are fed up with the Lib Dem chaos locally."

"Common sense politics is coming back."
