He moved to London to work for Arthur Andersen as a management consultant before going on to study for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the Andersen School at UCLA in the USA. Nigel married his American wife, Melissa, in 1999 and they moved back to the UK in 2006 following the birth of their son. In the 2010 General Election Nigel contested the Luton South seat and achieved a 4.6% swing from Labour to the Conservatives.

Nigel was selected as the Conservative Party parliamentary candidate for Mid Worcestershire in November 2013 in an Open Primary (a public meeting at which both Conservative and non-Conservative supporters attended and voted), and he won the seat with a majority of 20,532 in the May 2015 General Election. He contested the same seat again in the June 2017 General Election and increased his majority to 23,326. Following this election, Nigel was appointed as the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Ministers in the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport (DCMS).
